Our Story
How Blaine is reimagining its future through arts, culture, and cross-border creativity.
A Border Town With Creative Vision
Blaine sits at a unique crossroads – literally. As the last American city before the Canadian border, it has always been a place of transition and exchange. Millions pass through each year, but few stop to explore what Blaine has to offer. That’s about to change.
Blaine’s historic downtown, waterfront marina, and proximity to both Birch Bay and the Peace Arch border crossing give it ingredients that most creative districts would envy: character, foot traffic potential, and a story worth telling. The challenge has been connecting these assets into a cohesive creative identity.
Building a Creative Economy
Placemake Arts Northwest sees Blaine as a high-potential candidate for Creative District certification. The strategy is different from Ferndale – where the arts scene is already established, Blaine’s approach focuses on building creative infrastructure from the ground up, leveraging tourism and cross-border traffic to create a sustainable arts economy.
Key assets include the Peace Arch International Sculpture Exhibition, the historic downtown commercial district, the waterfront and marina area, and the emerging arts community drawn by affordable studio space and Blaine’s natural beauty.
What’s Next
While Ferndale leads the initial Creative District certification effort, Blaine is building the community engagement and creative asset inventory needed for its own application. We’re identifying artists, businesses, and venues; developing event programming; and building partnerships with local organizations and cross-border cultural institutions.
