Our Story

How Ferndale became one of Whatcom County’s most vibrant creative communities.

A Creative Community Takes Shape

Ferndale has always been a community of makers. From its early days as an agricultural hub, the city attracted people who built things with their hands – farmers, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs who valued self-reliance and creativity. That spirit never left.

In recent years, a new wave of artists, musicians, and creative business owners have put down roots in Ferndale, drawn by affordable rents, a walkable downtown, and a community that genuinely supports local culture. Murals began appearing on building walls. Galleries opened in former storefronts. Breweries became gathering places where live music and art shows were as common as pint nights.

The Path to Creative District Certification

In early 2025, a group of community leaders recognized that Ferndale’s creative ecosystem had reached a tipping point. The arts weren’t just enriching the community – they were driving real economic activity. Restaurants were busier on art walk nights. Tourists were stopping in Ferndale specifically for murals and galleries. Creative businesses were creating jobs.

That’s when Placemake Arts Northwest was born. Founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, PANW’s mission is to secure Washington State Creative District certification for Ferndale – and eventually for Blaine and other Whatcom County communities.

State certification would bring tangible benefits: official highway signage directing visitors to the district, access to up to $50,000 in capital funding, regional marketing support through the state tourism office, and the credibility that comes with being recognized as a certified Creative District.

What’s Next

We’re currently in the application phase, building the community engagement data, creative asset inventory, and strategic plan that the state requires. This website is part of that effort – a living directory of Ferndale’s creative assets that demonstrates the depth and breadth of our arts community.

But we can’t do it alone. We need artists, business owners, venue operators, and community members to get involved – whether that means getting listed in our directory, attending events, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.
